We were very happy with the AKU Workshop last week. Over 100 attendees saw 25 speakers talk about the latest work in AKU.
Talks from out basic science teams on the Friday, from across the UK (Universities of Liverpool, Cambridge and Marseilles; Imperial College London; the Institute of Rheumatic Disease in Slovakia and SMEs, Agilent and Protein Technologies) led to great discussions that will hopefully help plan our next year of ground-breaking AKU research.
Saturday saw updates from our clinical teams in the UK (Royal Liverpool University Hospital), USA (National Institutes of Health), Jordan (University of Mutah) and India (Christian Medical College in Vellore); culminating in an announcement of our Campaign for Phase III clinical trial in nitisinone.
We rounded up with a look into the wider world of rare diseases from Stephen Nutt of Rare Disease UK; and the first screening of a new AKU Video from Leona Wagner.
Slides, videos, photos and more will be uploaded soon, so keep an eye on www.alkaptonuria.info
AKU patient, Simon Laxon says of the workshop: "I wanted to thank you again for a
great day. My wife agrees with me when I say that it is heart-warming
to see so many people interested in trying to find a cure for AKU. We found all
of the presentations very interesting and came away feeling really
positive about the future."
We also had some media coverage of the event and around our plans for a nitisinone clinical trial:
